The Caregiver Was Accused of Stealing From the Lockbox at Sunday Dinner—Then the Ring Camera Showed Whose Hand Knew the Code

"She's the only one who knew the code"—and every face at the table turned toward me.
Deb slammed the empty lockbox down so hard the silverware jumped.
I've cared for Miss Maggie for three years. I live in her house. I bathe her, cook for her, cut her food. She is the only family I have in this country. And now her daughter was standing at the head of the table, diamond ring flashing, pointing at me like I was a stranger who broke in.
I looked at Miss Maggie. Her eyes were wide, flickering the way they do when she's trying to hold onto a thought. She reached for my sleeve. Deb pulled the wheelchair back.
"Mom, don't. You don't know what she's been doing."
Nobody asked me a single question. Nobody asked where I was two nights ago, when the box was emptied. They'd already decided. Deb had done that part before I ever sat down.
Then I remembered. The lockbox code was changed two months ago—and Deb was the one who changed it.
So why was she so certain I was the only one who knew it?
Paul said it softly, almost to himself. "What about the Ring camera?"
Deb's hand froze in the air mid-point.
"That's a waste of time," she said. Too fast. "It doesn't even record."
Paul was already pulling his phone out.
