Jordan Beck slammed me against the metal lockers so hard the corridor echoed, and all twelve players stopped breathing.

Twenty minutes earlier, practice ended. Twenty minutes earlier, I found out I'd won the Carter Scholarship — the one Jordan wanted. He walked to my open gym bag in front of everyone, reached in, and pulled out his own championship ring.

"The ring was in HIS bag," he announced. "Check the cameras. Check anything you want."

Coach Reed stood at the end of the corridor, silent. I'd been to his office twice before. Twice I reported Jordan's bullying. Twice he told me not to make problems for a team having its best season in a decade.

"Alex," Coach said, "hand over your locker key. If you can't explain how this ring got in your bag, you're off the team and I'm calling your parents tonight."

Everyone assumed I was caught.
