My Mother-in-Law Threw My Wife Down the Stairs — Then My Wife's Phone Spoke

My wife hit the stair rail and went down the last six steps just as I opened the front door. My mother stood over her, pointing, already saying, "She attacked me, Cory — look at her!"
Dana was crumpled at the bottom of our farmhouse stairs, a cut above her eyebrow, phone still clutched in her right hand. I hadn't even set down my keys. My mother had rehearsed the line — it came out too fast, too polished, like she'd been waiting for me to walk in.
Then I noticed Dana wasn't arguing back. She wasn't crying. She was pressing play.
Her phone speaker crackled, and my own mother's voice filled the hallway — recorded twenty minutes earlier, threatening my wife: sign the quitclaim over her half of the house, or her medication goes missing. Then the sound of the shove. Then the accusation, word for word, before it even happened.
I looked at my mother. Her face changed first — and then my hand moved.
But what the sheriff found in the county records the next morning was worse.
